Sunburst patio cover Universal City: a lean-to all steel awning custom designed by the customer and I. The patio cover is simple, yet rugged and beautiful and will be sure to last for many years. This patio cover measured 16’x18′ and at it’s peak is 15′ tall. The eaves of the patio cover were at 7′. The patio cover was attached to the home and sealed to prevent rain runoff from hitting the patio. The frame was painted and color matched to the home.

Why a lean-to steel patio cover works

A lean-to cover is attached to the house on one side, which makes it an easy way to add shade to a patio that is already part of your daily routine. The roof rises from the 7′ eaves to the 15′ peak, and that height gives the space an open, airy feel instead of a low ceiling over your head. Sealing the cover where it meets the home, as was done here, helps keep rain runoff from hitting the patio below.

Steel suits the climate in our area. It stands up to strong Texas sun, does not rot, and needs little upkeep over the years. A sturdy post and beam frame, built and installed correctly, is also what helps a cover handle the wind that comes with spring and summer storms. About this ranch house patio cover project

This ranch house patio cover project in Junction, Texas included two patio covers, metal framed decks and metal framed steps. Each post was buried 18″ with dowels that were attached to the existing rock in the land. 12 inches of concrete was then poured into 32″ sono tubes to stabilize all of the posts. No matter the weather, it is unlikely that this deck and patio cover will go anywhere!

The first patio cover ran 32’x12′ and has an “all-in-one” deck. The second patio cover was 24’x12′ and also includes the steel framed deck. Both have a custom steel staircase attached to the end.

Building on rocky ranch land

Ranch and country properties come with their own challenges. Here, the land had existing rock, so the posts were tied to it with dowels and set in concrete-filled tubes, which is how the frame was made steady. A patio cover with a deck is a larger structure than a simple roof, so a solid footing matters even more. Wind and weather out in open country can be hard on anything that is not anchored well.

Steel is a practical material for this kind of setting. It gives shade from the strong Texas sun, does not rot, and needs little upkeep, which counts when the property is far from town. A covered deck also gives a family or a group of guests a comfortable place to sit out of the heat, with steel stairs that make getting up and down easy.
